A pelican has bitten into herself and blood is dripping from her - an image of sacrifice, particularly the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.  The pelican sits in front of the Holy City.  Water flows round the walls of the city.  Surrounding the waters, at the feet of the angels are the sun and the moon and two shields representing Scotland - namely the Lion Rampant & St. Andrew's Cross.
